By Chuck Reherman, Sports Editor – MARLOW – In the season opener, Southwest Covenant concentrated on the running game.
Friday night, the Patriots went back to “Air Webb.”
Senior quarterback Sam Webb had a stellar night passing the ball, throwing for seven touchdowns and leading the Patriots to a 53-18 rout of Central Marlow, at Central High School.
The Patriots, 2-0, have outscored their first two opponents, both class B schools, 107-38 with their potent offensive attack.
Central, after seeing the Patriots use a ground game in the win over Arkoma, came in looking to stop that attack. The Central defense, though, proved to be no match for Webb, who connected of 12 of 20 passes for 221 yards and seven touchdowns. Webb now has 10 touchdown passes on the season.
“Sam was throwing the ball well in the game and probably should have had more completions,” head coach Trey Cloud said. “We went into the game wanting to run the ball, but Central was giving us the pass play and when you have someone like Sam back there, they give you the pass, you are going to take it.
“And, we have guys that can go and catch the ball,” he added. “Cole (Shaw) had a great game on the receiving end and Trevor (Kelly) did a great job running and catching the ball.”
Shaw finished the night catching six passes for 127 yards and four touchdowns. Kelly caught three passes for 43 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 58 yards and another score.
The game was close at one point, but when Webb teamed up with Shaw for the third time in the first half, the contest was all Patriots after that. Webb and Shaw connected on a 27-yard scoring pass that gave the Patriots a 27-12 lead.
Webb teamed up with Bryce Brown minutes later, after the defense stopped the Bronchos in three plays, on a 30-yard scoring pass. Webb ran in the conversion to open a 35-12 lead.
SWCS, who scored 34 points in the second quarter, capped the first half when Webb and Shaw teamed up for a fourth touchdown, a 21-yard scoring pass and a 41-12 lead.
Webb’s seventh touchdown pass of the game came in the third quarter, a 30-yard pass to Kelly. It was the second touchdown pass of the season to two had teamed up on.
Central did make it 47-18 on a Braden Edens nine-yard run in the fourth quarter. Kelly capped the scoring with a 30-yard run with five minutes left in the game.
Webb and Shaw teamed up on the first score of the game, a 29-yard touchdown pass and a 7-0 lead.
Nathan Hagan caught a 17-yard scoring pass from Webb and then Shaw and Webb connected again in the second quarter from 15-yards out that made it a 20-0 game.
Central’s Matt Harris returned the kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown and an Edens eight-yard did make it 20-12 midway in the second quarter.
The Patriot defense held Central to 62 yards of offense for the game. Webb led the defense as well with nine tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery. Hagan added seven tackles.
“Our defense played really, well,” Cloud said. “We had the one breakdown in the kicking game, but for the most part it was a good night on defense.
“Sam played well on the defensive side also and Nathan and Trevor had good games on defense, he added. “It was good to get that win on the road, now we have to concentrate on playing a good Coyle team this week.”
