The long-awaited $44.6 million Yukon school bond passed Tuesday night by an overwhelming margin.
Almost 75 percent of all voters cast an affirmative vote for the measure. Less than 1,000 voters were opposed to the proposal.
Superintendent Jason Simeroth was pleased.
“I’m just thrilled with the support we get from our community,” he said. “I think it’s evidenced by everything that they do, but this is just another affirmation of how they feel about their school district and the work that their teachers do. It’s a good day to be a Miller,” he said.
The bond includes eight areas of improvement in addition to a new elementary and intermediate school.
Technology needs include new computers, instructional software, Chrome Books, security software, and intercom systems. The arts department requires new uniforms, trailer for a marching band, instruments, sound and sound equipment. Facility improvements would include security features, renovations, carpet and classroom furniture, and new roofs and carpeting district wide. Transportation will also expand for route buses, activity buses, and maintenance vehicles.
School officials said the bond is a vital necessity for a growing district that continues to demand improvements and expansion. During the 2007-2008 school year, 6,922 students were enrolled while today 8,762 students are in the district now.
