By Chuck Reherman, Sports Editor – MOUNTAIN VIEW – Southwest Covenant opened the District C-2 schedule in impressive fashion Friday night, posting the mercy rule on Mountain View-Gotebo.

Trevor Kelly ran for four first quarter touchdowns and scored six overall as the Patriots rolled to a 67-22 win over the Tigers in three quarters.

The Patriots, 5-1, overall, took control of the game from the opening bell, led 27-0 in the opening quarter and 39-8 at the intermission.

Kelly ran for 140 yards on eight carries, scoring four rushing touchdowns. He also returned a kickoff for a score.

“We wanted to establish the run early and Trevor had some big runs for us in the that first quarter,” SWCS head coach Trey Cloud said. “The line did a great job of opening holes for the runningbacks and once we got past the line of scrimmage, it was hard for them to catch us.

“It was a good way to open the district season,” he said. “We did get to play all of our kids and they did a good job of moving the ball on offense.”

The Patriots rolled up 318 yards of offense (250 on the ground) in only 38 plays. Mountain View finished with 230 yards, but most of that came in the second half.

Kelly gave the Patriots the lead on his first carry of the game, breaking past the line and racing 60-yards for the initial score.

The Patriot senior runningback scored three more times in the opening quarter. Kelly scored on runs of 19, 12 and 41 yards. He had four carries in the opening quarter for 132 yards.

Cloud, who went to his back-up runningbacks in the second quarter, saw the offense keep up the scoring pace. Ben Webb scored on a two-yard run to open a 33-0 lead and Tyler Kelly added a two-yard scoring run after the Patriots intercepted a pass to open a 39-0 lead.

Bryce Coon scored on a two-yard run to put Mountain View on the board late in the first half, 39-8.

Mountain View-Gotebo did try to make it a game as Skylar Ahlsten scored on an 85-yard run to open the second half and cut the lead to 33-14.

Ben Webb scored on a 39-yard run and after a second Tiger turnover, scored on a 36-yard run to give the Patriots a 47-14 advantage.

Mountain View made it a 53-22 game when Brycen Fisher scored on a three-yard pass from Brayden Nicholes. Nicholes ran in the conversion to cut the lead to 31-points.

Trevor Kelly added his fifth touchdown in the night, returning the ensuing kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown and a 60-22 lead.

The Patriots ended the game late in the third quarter when Bryce Brown caught a 23-yard scoring pass from Jesse Deason.

Ben Webb finished the night with 82 yards rushing. Sam Webb completed only one of three passes for 44 yards, snapping a streak of five straight 150-plus yard passing games.

The Patriots return home to host Corn Bible Academy in a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday night at Patriot Stadium.
