By Chuck Reherman, Sports Editor – MUSTANG – Yukon’s middle school Millerettes moved one step from playing for a title Monday, winning their opening two rounds of the Central Oklahoma Middle School Athletic Conference Tournament in Mustang.
The Millerettes will play Stillwater in the 11:40 a.m. semifinals Tuesday at Mustang North High School. The winner advances to the 3:40 p.m. finals also set at North.
The loser will still have a chance to come back and play for the title. The loser will play the winner of the losers bracket at 2:20 p.m. also at North.
The Millerettes earned their way to the semifinal with a 2-0 winner over Mustang South at Mustang High School Softball Complex. YMS had opened the tournament with a bye as one of the top two seeds, then beat Edmond Summit in the second round.
YMS scored both of their runs in the first inning off the bat of Gabriella Everitt, who doubled to drive in both runners. With one out, Ashlynn Davis drew a walk and Taylor McMahon laid down a bunt and reached on an error by the Mustang catcher.
Everitt drilled the double over the centerfielder’s head to drive in both runners.
The Millerettes held of a Mustang South rally in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mustang got two runners on base with one out, but a a ground ball up the middle, Davis dove for the ball, got a glove on it and deflected it to Jaci McKee, who gathered the ball and for the runner out at second.
With runners at first and third, Analise Rayburn got the next batter to fly out to Marlee Warden at right field.
Mustang did get a runner on base in the bottom of the final inning, but, the Millerettes recorded the final out on a ground ball.
In the opening game for YMS, Everitt slugged a two-run home run in the first inning to give the Millerettes the lead and YMS posted a 3-1 win overt Summit.
McMahon had walked with two out to keep the inning alive and Everitt drilled a pitch over the left field wall.
Summit did make it a 2-1 game in the third, but the Millerettes got it back in the bottom of the frame. Warden reached on an error and Rayburn bunted her over to third. Davis then laid down a bunt that scored the run.
