SWCS draws CBA in opening round at volleyball state

By Chuck Reherman, Sports Editor – Southwest Covenant has drawn the top seed as the Lady Patriots make their second straight appearance in the classs 3A State Voilleyball Tournamernt.

No. 8 ranked SWCS drew No. 1 ranked Corn Bible Academy in the opening round. The team will meet at 3:15 p.m. in the final match of the opening round at Edmond Deer Creek High School.

Chisholm and Summit Christian make up the other half of the top bracket. Crossings Christian, Cement, Oklahoma Union and Tulsa Holland Hall make up the other side of the bracket.

Crossings and Cement open the tournament at 10 a.m. and Oklahoma Union and Holland Hall play at 11:45 a.m.

Chisholm and Summit Christian play at 1:30 p.m. followed by the Lady Patriots and Corn Bible.

The tournament shifts to Choctaw on Saturday. The Crossings-Cement winner plays the Oklahoma Union-Holland Hall winner at 9 a.m. The SWCS-CBA winner plays the CHS-TSCA winner at 10:45 a.m. The championship game will be played at 4:30 p.m.

The Lady Patriots bring in an 18-7 record to the state tournament, while Corn Bible is 26-5. All five of their losses came to close 4A teams.

Corn Bible is 19-5 against top 20 ranked teams, beating No. 19 Erick 25-11, 25-4, 25-12 in the region VI finals. CBA also owns wins over state tournament teams Cement and Crossings Christian School.

“Corn Bible will be one of the best teams we have played all season, but when you get to state, you are playing the best teams,” SWCS head coach Samantha Lindsey said. “We are excited about the chance to play for a second straight year in the state tournament. We lost in the first round last year and the girls are determined to get past that round this year.

“We know it will be a challenge, we have seen where they have beaten some really good teams,” she added. “But, we will go in and play the best we can, play our game and see how things turn out. Hopefully, we will be going to Choctaw on Saturday to play.”
