Patriots rout Temple for third C-2 win

By Chuck Reherman, Sports Editor – TEMPLE – Southwest Covenant remained unbeaten and set up a clash for a shot at the district title this coming week.

The Patriots rolled to a 57-12 win over Temple Thursday night in a district C-2 game at Temple.4

The Patriots, 7-1 overall, improved to 3-0 in the district race with two games remaining. SWCS will face unbeaten Tipton on Thursday at Patriot Field for the district title.

It was also the third straight game the Patriots mercy-ruled an opponent. This one ended early in the third quarter.

The game was never really a contest. SWCS rolled to a 34-0 first quarter lead and led 44-12 at the intermission.

“We played well,” Patriot coach Trey Cloud said. “We came out fast and took care of business. My younger kids gave up some stuff at the end of the first half, but that is always expected. But, we got them good reps.”

The Patriots had only 297 yards of offense, but most of their drives didn’t have to go very far. SWCS also took advantage of two Temple turnovers.

Cole Shaw scored the first three touchdowns on the night. He caught a three-yard scoring pass from Sam Webb on the opening drive.

Three plays later, he picked off a Temple pass and returned it 14-yards for a touchdown and a 13-0 lead,

Shaw teamed up with Webb again on the Patriots’ second possession, scoring on a 28-yard pass to open a 20-0 lead. Webb finished the game completing eight of nine passes for 100 yards and four touchdowns.

The Patriots ran their lead to 27-0 on a 25-yard Nathan Hagan touchdown run. Trevor Kelly closed the first quarter, scoring on a 24-yard run to make it a 34-0 lead.

A Logan Shields 28-yard field goal and a four-yard run by Tyler Kelly made it a 44-0 Patriot lead early in the second quarter.

The second team defense gave up a pair of scores by Quinzell Tisdale that cut the lead to 44-12 at the intermission.

Southwest Covenant came out in the second half and put the game away early in the third.

Webb connected on an 11-yard scoring pass to Tim Kramer and then ended the game with a 10-yard scoring pass to Trevor Kelly.

Hagan led the Patriot run game with 83 yards on four carries. Trevor Kelly had 38 on four and Draake Rought 32 on six. Shaw caught five passes for 60-yards.
