By Chuck Reherman, Sports Editor – Southwest Covenant opened the home portion of their schedule in impressive fashion and earning their second win of the season.
The Lady Patriots used the inside attack of Kylie Moseley and the transition scoring of Hannah Cook to post a 46-25 win over Astec Charter School.
SWCS, 2-0, plays today in the Jim Elliot Crusader Classic at Christian Heritage Academy.
The game was a little closer early than expected. But, the third quarter put the control back in the Lady Patriots’ hands.
SWCS was leading 18-11 starting the second half, but came out and scored the first seven points on field goals from Moseley and Tytiana Mustin around a Cook trey, 24-12.
Leading 27-14, Ally Bales drilled a trey to open a 30-14 lead. Moseley added a field goal and a free throw and Mustin and Cook added buckets to push the lead to 37-18.
The Lady Patriots went back to the inside with Moseley, who scored eight points in the final frame. Taniya Matlock scored all seven of Astec’s points.
Southwest Covenant did get off to a slow start, hitting only one of their first five shots from the floor, a shot by Mustin.
A pair of Cook free throws gave the Lady Patriots the lead and she hit two more buckets and a trey to spot SWCS to an 11-6 lead late in the opening quarter.
Astec did try to slow the pace of the game down in the second quarter and held the Lady Patriots to only seven points, Moseley hit a pair of shots and added a free throw to send SWCS to an 18-12 lead at the intermission.
Moseley led the scoring with 20 points, hitting eight shots from the field, but went only four of 12 from the free throw line.
Cook chipped in 14 points Mustin had six and Bales five. Matlock led Astec with 11.
The Lady Patriots will host Oklahoma City Crooked Oak on Thursday in a 6;30 p.m. game. SWCS will close out the 2017 portion of the schedule hosting Oklahoma Christian Academy in a 6:30 p.m. contest on Friday.
