By Mindy Ragan Wood, Staff Writer – Yukon Parks and Recreation is seeking diaper donations for the Children Center Hospital, a rehabilitation center for children with complex medical needs, in Bethany.
Parks and Recreation Director Jan Scott said every year her department employees compete to see which location can drum up the most diapers.
“Last year we took in 18,000 diapers and the Jackie Cooper Gym won the competition for the most diapers. I take them out to lunch as a reward for their hard work,” she said.
The department surpassed 2015 by at least 3,000 diapers and has increased their collections every year since 2014.
“The Children’s Center uses 10,000 diapers a week,” Scott said. “We have until December 31 to collect as many as we can.”
At the conclusion of the drive, park employees travel in the parks and recreation van to the center to deliver the diapers.
The department is a member of the center’s Santa’s Helper program. Some families whose children are treated at the non-profit hospital have their children in Yukon’s Spirit League sports program for special needs athletes.
Diaper donations can be left at the Jackie Cooper Gym, Dale Robertson Center, Yukon Community Center, Community Coffee on Fridays and the Parks and Recreation office.
