Yukon won its second tournament of the season and did it in dominating fashion as the Millerettes routed all three opponents in defending their Chickasha Classic title.
The Millerettes rolled past class 5A No. 6 ranked Lawton MacArthur 65-36 in the finals.
The No. 18 ranked Millerettes, 8-3, had routed Cache 70-30 in the semifinals and had rolled past Star Spencer 99-20 in the opening round. YHS will look to make it three in a row in tournaments this week when the Millerettes compete in the Purcell Invitational.
Lawton Mac, 7-3, whose two other losses came to crosstown rivals Lawton Ike and Lawton, had come in with a win over Putnam City North in the Altus Tournament. And, the Lady Highlanders had given the Millerettes some problems early and it appeared YHS would be in a for a battle.
The Millerettes took control of the game late in the first half and never looked back in the second half.
“The girls handled themselves really well in the tournament,” Millerette head coach Roy Wyckoff said. “You can only control how you play, you can’t control who you play good or bad and so that is how is we try to focus no matter who we play. We try to focus on what we are suppose to do.
“Lawton Mac is ranked sixth in 5A and the girls did a really good job of taking care of business and do what they were supposed to do,” he said. “They handled themselves like they expected to do that and I was proud of them for that. It was all I could ask of them.
“It is always good to get three wins in a row, just to get momentum. Everyone in our conference is ranked and it is always tough when we step on the court.”
The Millerettes will play at Edmond Santa Fe on Tuesday in a key Central Oklahoma Athletic Conference game, then head to Purcell for the Purcell Invitational Tournament.
Wyckoff said it is another smaller school tournament, but this will feature some of the top teams in smaller classes.
“The field is pretty good, all but two teams are ranked in their class,” Wyckoff said. “It will be a tougher tournament, but they have good teams like Anadarko, Mount St. Mary’s Sulphur and Vanoss are small schools, but they have good records and good teams.
“Some of those small schools have really good basketball teams. We knew what kind of team Tahlequah Sequoyah was when we played them in the Tahlequah.”
The Millerettes led 12-10 early in the second quarter when Meya Case drained a trey to open a five point lead. Becka Cammon in a pair of shots in the lane to open a 20-12 lead and after free throws from Kristen Readel, Case hit another trey to make it a 25-14 game.
Cammon added a third field goal and gave the Millerettes a 27-12 lead at the intermission.
The Millerettes put the game out of reach in the third quarter, pushing the lead to 21-points late in the quarter.
Cammon hit a pair of free throws and a field goal and trey from Ashlynn Basler opened a 35-17 lead. Readel added a trey and a pair of field goals from Case helped run the lead to 50-29 heading into the final eight minutes.
Cammon led the scoring with 21 points, Case added 13, Basler 12, Sunny Middleton five and Jaylee Watson four.
In the semifinals, the Millerettes jumped on Cache from the opening tip and rolled to a 70-30 win.
YHS came out firing and used four Basler treys and one from Case to spark a 27-4 scoring run in the opening eight minutes. Basler scored 14 points in the opening frame.
The Millerettes continued their run in the second, outscoring Cache 16-11 and opening a 40-15 lead at the intermission. Middleton came off the bench to score eight points, including a trey, and Case added four.
Basler led the scoring with 19, Middleton and Cammon had 10 each.
In the opening round, the Millerettes rolled to a 99-20 win over Star Spencer.
All 12 players scored, led by Middleton with 17. McKenzie Brown had 13, Kaitlyn Pivniska 12, Maycie Reed 11 and Cammon and Basler 10.
