Southwest Covenant will take its first and only test of the pre-season on Friday as the Patriots travel to Geary for a scrimmage.
The scrimmage will feature four teams and will give the Patriots a variety of looks on offense and defense.
It will be the only pre-season test for the Patriots, who will have an open date on Aug. 24 and will open the season Aug. 31 on the road to Central Marlow.
The Patriots spent the first four days of practice working mainly on conditioning and basic drills, but have worked on offense.
“Practice has gone well, we have a good group of players out there and most of them know what we expect,” SWCS head coach Trey Cloud said. “And, our younger players are picking up on things well.
“We have a lot of experience returning in the backfield and the front line that have allowed us to move along quicker in our practices,” he said. “We will get in eight good practices before our scrimmage and we are looking forward to seeing what we can do against an opponent,” he said. “We have gone to Geary the last few years and it has always been a good scrimmage for us. This year, we will have an extra week to get ready for our opening game. Last year we played in that zero week and had less time to prepare for that first game.”
The Patriots only have four home games this season and won’t play a home game until Sept. 21, their district opener. SWCS goes on the road to Empire Sept. 7 and to Bartlesville Wesleyan on Sept. 14. That game will be somewhat of a homecoming for Cloud, who played high school ball there and his father is the head coach there again.
That first home game will also be the district opener with Bluejacket.
The other home games are Oct. 5 with Coyle, Oct. 12 with Covington-Douglas and Nov. 2 with Medford. All games will kickoff at 7 p.m.
