Southwest Covenant rolled through their non-conference schedule on the road and the Patriots continued that trend in their first home game Thursday night.
SWCS mercy-ruled their fourth straight opponent and opened District C-3 play with a 47-0 win over Bluejacket at Patriot Field.
The No. 7 ranked Patriots improved to 4-0 with the lopsided win. It was the fourth straight game that SWCS has scored 30 points in the opening quarter and have yet to play a full four quarter game.
The Patriots scored their 47 points in the first half and ended the game at halftime. SWCS has not played a game where the team has had to enter the fourth quarter.
It was the home opener for the Patriots and it was an emotional opener. The captains carried the jersey of SWCS grad and former teammate Luke Ross with them out to midfield for the coin toss. Ross was killed in a traffic accident this past year.
And the team honored their former teammate by scoring on their first four possessions of the game.
“It was an emotional start to the game for us and these guys went out and played really well,” SWCS head coach Trey Cloud said. “Our defense played exceptionally well again, they were flying to the football and played physical.
“The offense continues to play well,” he added. “The defense has given us good field position in all four games and they have forced turnovers and really helped set the offense up.”
The defense smothered Bluejacket, holding the Chieftains to only 29 yards of total offense in the game on 33 plays. The Patriot offense had 202 yards on 29 plays.
SWCS scored on their opening possession of the night as Trevor Kelly scored on a three-yard run to put the Patriots in front 6-0.
It was the first of three first quarter touchdown runs. Kelly also scored on a 19-yard and 50-yard runs. The 50-yard run came in the closing seconds of the quarter and gave the Patriots a 33-0 lead.
Will Haas caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from Ben Webb to give SWCS a 13-0 lead. Jesse Deason returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown that made it 26-0.
The Patriots added a touchdown on their fifth offensive possession of the night with Webb scoring on a three-yard run to cap a short drive. Logan Shields’ extra point made it a 40-0 game.
Shields scored on a 9-yard pass from Webb midway in the frame to open the 47-0 lead.
Webb completed six of eight passes for 114 yards and the two touchdowns. Haas caught three passes for 51 yards and Cole Shaw had one for 43. Kelly ran for 72 yards on nine carries to lead the Patriot rushing.
The defense held Bluejacket to eight yards rushing on 14 carries. Bluejacket was three of 15 passing for 21 yards and had two passes intercepted.
Southwest Covenant will travel to Deer Creek-Lamont for their second district game Friday.
