Card sharks across Yukon will congregate at a Main Street church for some post-Valentine’s Day competition and camaraderie … all for a good cause.

Yukon Compassionate Hands will present its annual “Card Party” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15 at the First Church of the Nazarene, 525 E Main. It costs $20 to play and table, lunch and door prize sponsors are welcome.

“It’s a fun day of fellowship and friendly competition,” Compassionate Hands’ director Joanne Riley said. “They play all kinds of card games … from Bridge to Farkle to Gin Rummy, and different types of dominoes.”

About 100 players are expected to showcase their skills at the Card Party, a popular yearly fundraiser for Compassionate Hands’ faith-based nonprofit ministry. Several Yukon churches have hosted the event over the years.

The card benefit offers attendees more than just table games.

“We always provide a beautiful meal; this year it will be Primo’s pasta,” Riley said. “We’ll also have desserts and a 50/50 raffle.

“We’re now collecting door prizes for some really nice items from local businesses like The Arrangement and Carpenter’s Ace Hardware.”

Anyone who wants to support the Feb. 15th Card Party (even if they can’t play) is welcome to participate as an event sponsor. Sponsorships are $300 for lunch and $75 for a table. Door prizes sponsors are asked to provide items valued at about $25.

“One of our longtime supporters, Genie Vinson, always hosts the Yukon Community Coffee on the Friday morning of the Card Party,” Riley said. “You can always count on Genie.”
The Yukon Chamber of Commerce’s weekly community coffee will begin at 8 a.m. Feb. 15 to promote the card benefit at Yukon’s Nazarene church. Business and community leaders attend this networking event.

Now in its 25th year, Compassionate Hands helps struggling Yukon families with emergency rent and utility assistance. An accessible Care-A-Van provides transportation for local seniors and disabled residents to medical appointments and personal errands.

Tickets for the Card Party are available at the Compassionate Hands’ office, 119 S 6th; or online at www.compassionatehandsyukon.org. For more information, call 354-9591.
