On February 21, 2019, at the age of 81, John Wayne McDaniel (Wayne), passed on to his next great adventure surrounded by his loving family.
Wayne was born on August 18, 1937, to Stafford and Bernice McDaniel in Marlow, Oklahoma. Part of a large family, Wayne grew up with two brothers, Stanley and J.W., and two sisters, Peggy and Carol Ann.
While Wayne was in high school, his family moved from Marlow to Yukon, Oklahoma, where he met his future wife, Janelle Gibson, at Yukon High School. Just a few years later, on June 7, 1957, Wayne married his sweetheart and former classmate, Janelle, at the First Christian Church in Yukon.
During their 61 years of marriage, Wayne and Janelle welcomed two children, Diane and Keith, lived in Alabama and Oklahoma, went on countless adventures, witnessed the births of three granddaughters and a great-granddaughter, and relished the life they shared together and with family.
Before retirement, Wayne worked as a lineman for Oklahoma Gas & Electric, a lineman trainer at A.B. Chance Company, and then eventually went on to work in electrical sales. Wayne was an avid storyteller, an adventurer, a talented cook, a jokester, and a passionate golfer. Wayne, who was referred to affectionately as “Papaw” by his doting granddaughters, will be greatly missed by those he left behind.
Wayne was preceded in death by his beloved son, Keith. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Stafford and Bernice, and three of his siblings, Stanley, Peggy, and Carol Ann.
Wayne is survived by many loving family members who will miss him greatly: his wife, Janelle; his daughter, Diane, and her husband, Gary; his brother, J.W.; his granddaughters Alisha, Caitlin, and Tessa, and Tessa’s husband, Cooper; and his great-granddaughter, Maddison.
A graveside service in celebration of Wayne’s life was held at the Yukon Cemetery on Monday, February 25, 2019.
