Early season tests.
It’s a challenge that Yukon’s Millerette soccer team is up to the task.
Yukon will make the trip south Friday to open the season against perennial power Norman North in the season opener at North. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m.
An experienced YHS squad will be looking to make it two in a row against the Lady Timberwolves. YHS beat Norman North 2-1 in a shoot out last year at YHS, winning the shootout 4-3.
Norman North went on to reach the state semifinals before bowing out to Broken Arrow 1-0. The Lady T-Wolves return a cast of starters back from that team and will be looking to avenge last year’s loss to the Millerettes,
“Norman North always has a very good team and they will definitely be a challenge for us,” Millerette head coach Steve Scott said. “We have a talented group again this year and I look for it a be a great match against two really good teams.
“North is a team that plays a very good defense and they are capable of scoring at anytime,” he said. “We do look forward to the challenge.”
The Millerettes turned up for their season opener by competing in their annual Spring Thaw Festival. YHS finished the day going 2-0-1.
Yukon beat Moore 2-0 and Southmoore 2-0, then drew with Clinton 2-2, playing a lot of younger layers in that final match.
“Overall it was a good outing,” Scott said. “We learned a lot about the ability we have and some things that we can definitely do and some that we need to make adjustments for.
“We have made strides in a positive direction looking towards what we want to look like coming out against Norman North.”
Myka Heimbach scored both goals in the 2-0 win over Moore.
Kloie Vrana scored four minutes into the Moore match and Katelynn Fair added one two minutes later.
YHS came from behind to tie Clinton as Asley Baker scored in the 47th minute to tie. Peyton Brenneis scored the first goal 16 minutes in.
