Yukon Public Schools’ board members formally approved hiring the principal for Yukon’s new school at Tuesday night’s board meeting.
YPS Superintendent Dr. Jason Simeroth introduced Tracy Sowinski as the first principal for Redstone Intermediate School. Redstone Intermediate is YPS’ 12th school and will open for the 2020-21 school year.
“It is with great excitement that I am joining the Yukon Public School district and given the opportunity to open Redstone Intermediate in 2020,” Sowinski said. “I am in my 17th year of education and absolutely love what I do.
“I look forward to building our Redstone community and making traditions all our own. I can’t wait to meet everyone and making Redstone Intermediate the best it can be.”
YPS officials interviewed candidates from “every corner of the state” for the new principal position, according to Dr. Simeroth.
“We were fortunate that Tracy was one of those candidates and ultimately our final choice,” he said. “She has the ability to build culture and increase the academic rigor while still maintaining it as a fun and inviting workplace for teachers and students. Her personality, work ethic and sense of humor fits with our administrative team and she is the perfect fit for our team.”
Sowinski initially was a special education teacher, and she now has an education career spanning almost two decades. She has 11 years of experience in administration.
Most recently she was principal at Mayfield Middle School in the Putnam City School District.
Sowinski focuses on building positive school climates through collaboration and active communication with staff, parents and the community.
Construction continues to progress on the new $25 million Redstone Intermediate School at Mustang and Britton roads. The contractor is Wynn Construction.
The approximately 120,000 square foot school will house about 900 fourth through sixth graders and is funded by a $44.6 million bond issue approved by YPS voters in September 2017.
The opening of Redstone Intermediate brings changes for some YPS campuses beginning with the 2020-21 school year.
Yukon Middle School will have grades seven and eight, with sixth grade moving to Redstone Intermediate, Lakeview Intermediate, and Independence Intermediate.
Both Lakeview and Independence are currently elementary schools but will become intermediate schools.
