Editor’s Note: Yukon Public Schools’ 11 “Teacher of the Year” finalists are being profiled in The Yukon Progress. Finalists were selected by peers to represent their school sites. A committee of past YPS winners and professional development representatives will select the Teacher of the Year with the winner announced at a March 26 banquet.

Amy Jandebeur has been awarded the 2019-20 Teacher of the Year for Skyview Elementary School. This is Amy’s third year teaching first grade at Skyview but her ninth year as an educator.

Her prior experience includes three years as a kindergarten teacher and three years as a pre-k teacher in Putnam City.

Amy was a non-traditional college student and attended the University of Phoenix while working full-time and caring for two small children with her husband. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She holds certifications in both Early Childhood and Elementary Education.

Amy has served on many professional committees over the years to improve education. She recently became an IT mentor after getting her Level One Educator certification from Google.

Mrs. Jandebeur is known for the relationships she builds with her students. She sees each child as unique and opens her heart and classroom to them.

Amy strives to help every student feel successful in some way every day. She loves her job and every “a-ha” moment.

Amy says, “There is so much more to teaching than the lesson plans.”

She goes on to say, “I didn’t choose to be a teacher. Teaching chose me. It’s HEART work.”

Amy had two children attending Yukon Public Schools when she started teaching. She and her husband moved to Yukon because of the opportunities available in the school system.

Both of their older children attended Yukon starting in Pre-K. Amy took a position in another district where she ended up adopting a student from her kindergarten class.

Shortly after adopting, they knew they wanted their youngest to attend Yukon schools so she took a leap of faith and she couldn’t be happier.

Skyview is where her oldest children attended, and Amy says it meant the world to her youngest to be able to attend the same school as her siblings.

Mrs. Jandebeur has said it is a true honor to be able to represent Skyview as Teacher of the Year because she loved the school and the district long before she became a teacher.
