With the 2019-20 school year ending in less than two weeks, high school seniors should apply soon to get help kick-starting their college education.

Applications are due May 6 for annual Yukon Chamber of Commerce scholarships funded by local businesses.

The deadline was pushed back one month to give students more time to finish their applications after school sites were closed in late March.

The final day of the 2019-20 school year is Friday, May 8.

Five $1,000 scholarships will be awarded this spring to graduating high school seniors.

“We will still award our Yukon Chamber scholarships because it wouldn’t be fair to the students if we didn’t,” Yukon Chamber CEO Pam Shelton said. “This is something we think is important.”

School sites across Oklahoma are closed for the rest of the school year as the state fights the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Yukon is among school districts that have implemented “distance learning” plans after all classes and activities were canceled.

Yukon students will be away from school sites until further notice.

The Yukon Chamber of Commerce’s scholarship fund is supported by various events and activities that the chamber organizes throughout the year, Shelton said.

Seniors at Yukon High School or a Yukon chamber member private school are qualified to apply for a $1,000 Yukon Chamber scholarship.

Eligibility requirements have been announced. All applicants:
• Must either be employed by a Yukon chamber member business or be the child/grandchild of a Yukon chamber member business owner or the child/grandchild of a Yukon chamber member’s employee.
• Must be enrolling in an accredited college or career technical school.
• Will be evaluated on their academic achievement, work, extra-curricular activities, community involvement, and an essay.
• Are required to submit a 250-word essay with their completed application.
• Should mail completed scholarship applications and required documentation to: Yukon Chamber of Commerce, Attention: Scholarship Program, 10 W Main, Yukon, OK 73099.
