For more than three decades, a Yukon home improvement company has been providing quality hometown service – not just to its neighbors, but to families across Oklahoma.
Smith’s Home Service started 31 years ago from inside Ken and Vanessa Smith’s Yukon home. As their business grew, they moved in 2009 to a new 2,400 square foot office/warehouse on Industrial Drive.
Ken Smith credits hard work and dedication – to both his business and community – to the company’s success and resiliency.
“We’ve always been willing to adapt and improve,” he said. “And we care for our customers like they’re our family.”
Vanessa was 8-1/2 months pregnant in 1989 when Ken came home from his job at a roofing company and told her, “I think I can do this better than who I’m working for.”
Vanessa realized her husband wanted to start his own roofing business and was immediately on board with the idea.
“So, we converted a bedroom to an office, got a landline and I started ‘cold calling’,” Ken Smith said.
Going house to house and knocking doors across the Surrey Hills neighborhood, Smith sold nine roofing jobs in the first week.
“All we did (in the early years) was roofs but then we started gradually adding other services to our wheelhouse,” he said. “We evolved to a year-round business.”
Smith’s Home Services provides customers with a wide range of home services: Kitchen and bath remodels, room additions and exterior improvements like patio covers, windows, doors, siding, gutters, and repainting.
Smith offers both residential and commercial roofing.
This family owned company operates by the motto, “Hometown Quality and Service – Wherever You Live.” While based in Yukon, Smith provides services statewide.
Besides a love for his community, the Yukon small business owner has a heart for volunteer service. Smith was a Yukon City Council member from 2011-15 and previously served on the Yukon Park Board, Board of Adjustments and Yukon Chamber of Commerce Board.
The Yukon Chamber in 2010 named Smith’s Home Service as its “Small Business of the Year.”
“We’ve always been a community-oriented company,” Ken said. “We like to help our community when we can, and this community has rallied around us when we’ve needed it.”
Ken and Vanessa Smith came to Yukon in 1987 and their two daughters attended Yukon Public Schools from start to finish.
Oldest daughter McKenzie, who taught five years at Yukon High School, is development director for a chain of nine stores. Youngest daughter Morgan teaches in Oklahoma City Public Schools.
Smith Home Services always provides free estimates for any of its roofing and home improvement services.
Fully licensed and insured, the Yukon company is A+ accredited by the Better Business Bureau.
