With plans to start moving its operation soon, a Yukon-based animal welfare group is offering another $25 adoption special this week.

Pets & People Humane Society will present an “Empty the Shelters” event this Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 1-4 at the old Yukon animal shelter, 701 Inla.

This marks the third time in 2020 that Pets & People has partnered with the sponsor, Bissell Pet Foundation, to provide discounted adoptions.

“In our past two events, the one in April and the one in July, we adopted 71 pets into homes!” Pets & People executive director Amy Young said. “We’re looking forward to similar success this time.

“We have many fantastic dogs and cats who need new loving homes. This is a great opportunity if you are thinking about adopting an animal to love on.”

Bissell Pet Foundation is teaming with 160 shelter partners in 33 states to reduce adoption fees and find forever homes.

During Empty the Shelters, Bissell sponsors adoption fees so adopters pay $25 or less.

“Our regular adoption fees are $135 for dogs and $85 for cats, and this $25 special is a limited-time offer,” Young said. “Many adopters at our previous Empty the Shelters events used the money they saved to buy items their pets really needed – like bowls, carriers and leashes.”

ON THE MOVE

The Yukon-based humane society continues to find new “furr-ever” homes and rescues for its current canine and feline inhabitants. That’s because Pets & People will soon move to a new place after more than 20 years sharing space with the City of Yukon.

After building renovations are finished and staff members are hired and trained, the new Pets & People Adoption Center will officially open in November at 9753 N.W. 4th (east of Morgan Road between Reno and N.W. 10th).

The Pets & People Adoption Center on N.W. 4th will feature a 7,782 square foot building, including a 1,682 square foot office area downstairs and a 6,100 square foot warehouse.

Each potential adopter will be screened during this week’s Empty the Shelters special to ensure they will be a “good fit” for the new pet.

Pets & People will make sure all animals are spayed/neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and heartworm tested.

“We want each of these animals to go to the very best homes,” Young said.

With the unforeseen COVID-19 pandemic, Bissell Pet Foundation has offered more assistance to shelter partners than ever before.

“Bissell Pet Foundation is happy to host Empty the Shelters events as our budget allows because we know it works for our shelter

partners and the pets in their care,” founder Cathy Bissell said. “By sponsoring adoption fees during Empty the Shelters, we make it a win-win for everyone involved.”

Since the program’s inception in 2016, Empty the Shelters has helped 40,550 shelter pets find homes.

A no-kill humane society, Pets & People has saved more than 58,000 dogs and cats since 1992.

Pets & People started in February 1990 as a pet therapy program, organized by Yukon veterinarian James Posey, to visit residents of local long-term care centers.
