Yukon Public Schools will not return to in-person learning after the Thanksgiving break because the county is in the red category for COVID-19 cases, Superintendent Dr. Jason Simeroth reports.

There will be no in-person learning in the district through Christmas break.

A statement released on the district’s social media page Friday states the following:

“With the updated 7-day COVID-19 average released from the Oklahoma State Department of Health today, still showing widespread community transmission in the red as categorized by the Oklahoma state Department of Education, Yukon Public Schools will continue with remote/online learning in our continuous learning plan starting Monday, Nov. 30.”

In a message released Wednesday, Simeroth stated that a decision will be based on the State Department of Education Friday, Nov. 27 update to the category of COVID-19 cases.

The risk level remained in the red category Friday morning, according to the Yukon Public Schools website.

Canadian County is currently in the red for the number of cases.

If in the orange category on Friday, students would return to in-person learning Monday, Nov. 30.

There have been 27 deaths in Canadian County, 6,515 cases and 5,358 people recover from COVID-19 since March, the State Department of Health reports.

Simeroth stated the following:

“We are currently watching the number of new COVID-19 cases rise and remain high both in Canadian County and across the state and do not expect to see a reduction in numbers this week. We are monitoring the situation daily and do not believe it is fair for our families or staff to be in and out of school on a weekly basis. YPS teachers have expressed that while in the Red Category, defined by data from the OK State Department of Education, they believe their safety and their families’ safety are being compromised. We wish to honor their work and respect their concerns.
Our current CLP two week period ends this Friday, November 27th, 2020 so we will re-evaluate returning to in-person instruction versus continuing with our CLP as we monitor the data reported throughout the week. The following bullet points clearly detail the steps that will be taken based on the OK SDE COVID-19 color categories leading up to our Christmas break.
If we are in the RED category on Friday November 27th, when the OK State Department of Health releases their updated COVID-19 Alert System numbers that will be correlated with the OK SDE COVID-19 color categories, we will be in CLP mode the final three weeks leading up to winter break.
If the number on Friday November 27th correlates to the ORANGE category, on the OK SDE COVID-19 color categories, we will return to in-person instruction on Monday November 30th.
Please do your part and help us slow the spread of COVID-19 and help us ensure our students can return to in-person instruction as soon as it is safe to do so.”
