The ice-skating rink is not as crowded during the day-time hours, said rink attendant Kristin Greenley, but when the lights are aglow in the park, the skaters fill the rink.
The rink at Yukon’s Chisholm Trail Park during this year’s
“Christmas in The Park” season gets a bit more crowded after dusk, Greenley said.
Kyle Hesse and his son Graysen, 6, of Yukon, tried out the rink on Friday, Nov. 27 during daylight hours.
“Kind of on a whim, we were driving by and my wife had told me about the rink. So, I thought we would check to see if it was open and we were the first ones here today,” Hesse said. “And it was the first time ice-skating for Graysen.”
Graysen used one of the red, plastic beginner push-carts available to help him stay on his skates as he made turns around the rink. The warm day melted some ice in places, and a fall to the ice resulted in soaked jeans. Burt Graysen didn’t mind and didn’t want to leave the rink.
Greenley opened up the skater shop and makes sure the ice is in good condition for skaters.
“We do temperature checks of the ice to make sure it is frozen at all times and our chiller and generator is working right. We hand out skates in the skate barn,” Greenley said.

Colder days make better ice-skating days, she said.
“If you want to come out when it is not as busy I would recommend coming early,” Greenley said.
She said more skaters come out to see the lights of the park after dark.
The hours that are busiest are 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Greenley said.
The hours for ice-skating are 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays, 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays, and 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays.
During winter break, Dec. 19 to Jan. 3, the hours will be noon to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and noon to 11 p.m. Fridays through Saturdays.
Skating will be noon to 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve and noon to 11 p.m. on Christmas Day. New Year’s Eve skating is noon to 10 p.m. and New Year’s Day is noon to 11 p.m.
