EL RENO – A longtime Canadian County Fair Board officer is due to continue serving after another candidate for his seat said he was dropping out of the race.

Yukon’s Kelly Beck – a cattle breeder – has chaired the county’s nine-member fair board since 2012 and been a member since the early 2000s.

Yukon’s Rick Cacini recently filed for Beck’s District 1 fair board post, apparently not realizing the incumbent would file for a new term.

An election has been called for 2 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 13 at the Canadian County Fairgrounds, 220 N Country Club Road.

Cacini – a Yukon City Council member – has bowed out after filing for the District 1 post during the Jan. 25-29 filing period at the Canadian County Clerk’s Office.

“It was a misunderstanding on my part thinking they needed help,” Cacini said, explaining his decision to file. “After talking to Kelly Beck, he said he was going to be staying on. I offered my services anytime they want me.

“I always say yes and want to help my community because this community helped my family when I was on overseas deployment.”

Canadian County District 1 Commissioner Marc Hader

Despite Cacini’s decision, the Feb. 13th Canadian County Fair Board election will proceed.

“It was too late for him to withdraw,” District 1 County Commissioner Marc Hader said this week. “We’ve already printed up the voter rolls.

“We still have to have the election.”

With news spreading that Cacini wouldn’t proceed and with this week’s arctic weather, it was suggested that Saturday’s fair board election be canceled.

SERVE THREE-YEAR TERMS

Canadian County Commissioners conduct fair board elections for their respective districts when there are contested races, which is rare but also occurred last year.

Canadian County Fair Board members are elected to serve three-year terms. The board is comprised of three members from each county commissioner district.

Two other Canadian County Fair Board members have won new terms in office after running unopposed in this year’s election – El Reno’s Clint Reuter in District 2 and Calumet’s Michael Crowly in District 3.

Since no challengers filed against the incumbents, elections are not needed in those districts.

Canadian County Fair Board members are elected to serve three-year terms. The board is comprised of three members from each county commissioner district.

Other county fair board members are Dan Wedman of Calumet, Michael Beard of Calumet, Justin Atkinson of El Reno, Ken Carpenter of Mustang, Phil Carson of Yukon, and Brent Hunt of El Reno.
