It’s about time to “clean up” Main Street.

A two-phase Main Street beautification effort starts May 8 in downtown Yukon.

“This is part of our plans to beautify downtown,” said Yukon Main Street Director Vicki Davis. “Yukon’s Best Main Street has become an affiliate with Keep Oklahoma Beautiful.”

Yukon’s Best Main Street volunteers and merchants will participate in a “planting day” Saturday morning in the 400 and 500 blocks of W. Main.

Five downtown Yukon planters will get a spring spruce-up this Saturday as the Main Street enhancement effort jump-starts.

Yukon Main Street’s Design Point committee, chaired by Stephanie Hale, has taken the lead to get the planters done.

“We incorporate the help of various businesses to water the planters and keep them nice throughout the year,” Davis reported.

The downtown Yukon beautification project will extend into the next month as part of the “Great American Clean-up”.

A Yukon Main Street clean-up day will be staged Saturday, June 12 in partnership with Keep Oklahoma Beautiful.

“There will be other efforts down the pike, but this is our first partnership with them,” Davis explained.

Sweeping sidewalks, pulling weeds from sidewalk cracks and general cleaning are on tap for June 12.

“We’ll definitely be looking for businesses, groups, organizations, community members, and families to come out and help,” Davis said. “The more volunteers we have, the more our stretch of Main Street we’ll be able to clean up.

“We’ll concentrate on the ‘walkable’ areas first. The more volunteers we have pre-signed up, the more we can expand that area to spruce up even more of downtown.”

Clean-up day organizers already have received a supply of gloves and vests to keep workers safe June 12.

Main Street merchants will be encouraged to wash their windows and sweep cobwebs from their buildings as part of the effort.

“We encourage all businesses and property owners in the area to use that week, that weekend or that day to get out and have a corporate ‘sprucing up’ of downtown,” Davis said.

Yukon’s Best Main Street and the Yukon 66 Association also are beautifying the downtown area by starting a network of “creative crosswalks.”
