Evelyn Sue Tucker Carpenter

Evelyn Sue Tucker Carpenter passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 12, 2021 after a brief illness. She was the oldest of two children and born on October 23, 1933 to John and Viola Evans Tucker in Pampa, Texas. Due to the Great Depression and World War II, the Tucker family moved many times to towns in Texas, Indiana, Illinois, Mississippi, then Oklahoma. She attended Anding High School in Bentonia, Mississippi, graduating in 1952.
Then, she was off to college at Central State College in Edmond, Oklahoma, where she graduated in 1956 with a BS degree. While teaching in Sharon, Kansas and Agra, Oklahoma, Evelyn studied for her master’s degree.
In 1959, she graduated with a Masters of Teaching degree from Central State College, now the University of Central Oklahoma.
Evelyn came to Mustang, Oklahoma to teach business classes in 1960. One of the school board members, Nelson Spitler, introduced her to dairyman, Ray Carpenter. They married on February 23, 1962, and lacked 35 days being married 50 years before Ray’s death on January 19, 2012.
Even though the Tucker family moved often, they always attended church wherever they lived. Evelyn gave her heart to the Lord and was baptized at the age of nine at Crossville, Illinois. She was always active in the church. In high school, she played the piano, sang in the choir, and was in a girls quartet at the churches she attended. She also played basketball and softball.
While teaching school, Evelyn always worked the concession stands and attended every basketball game.
She sponsored three senior trips. Besides church, Evelyn was active in the Sunshine OHCE Club in Mustang.
After Ray’s death, she enjoyed traveling with the Clinton Jamboree group, her church, her family, and especially enjoyed girls trips with her daughters and granddaughters.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, John and Viola Tucker and her husband, Ray Carpenter. She is survived by her son Ken Carpenter and wife, Debbie; daughters Karen Woodard and husband, Jeff; and Julie Shentwu and husband, Wells; eight grandchildren, Jennifer and husband Cory Parkerson, Grant Carpenter and wife, Lauren, Wade Woodard and wife, Jordan, Garrett Carpenter and wife, Natalie, Kylie Shentwu, Kimber Shentwu, Case Woodard, and Bo Shentwu; three great-grandsons, Shepherd & Whitten Woodard and Sawyer Carpenter, and one great-grandson on the way, Sutton Ray Carpenter. Evelyn is also survived by her sister Lois Wall and many, many relatives and friends.

The Service will be held Monday, May 17th 10a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Mustang.
