Yukon drivers should take it easy for school that starts Aug. 12

Slow down in the school zones today!

The times of the day when school zone lights will be flashing for motorists in Yukon have been announced by the City of Yukon.

School starts for Yukon Public Schools Thursday, Aug. 12. Motorists are urged to be cautious with over 9,000 students enrolled in Yukon schools for the fall semester.

Yukon Police Sgt. Joey Rushing is one of four of the department’s school resources officers. Rushing will be busy Thursday, and he had words of advise for motorists.

“Just slow down and be mindful of the lights and know that we’ve got a lot of kids who are walking and riding bikes and coming to school and they are hard to see,” Sgt. Rushing said.


School zone hours for elementary schools in Yukon city limits will be from 6:45 a.m. to 8 a.m. for parents to drop off children and then from 1:20 p.m. to 3 p.m. for students to be picked up. Pre-kindergarten students are released at 1:50 p.m. Schools in Yukon city limits include Central, 300 S. 9th Street; Ranchwood, 607 Annawood Drive; Shedeck, 2100 S. Holly Ave.; Skyview, 650 S. Yukon Parkway, and Myers, 1200 S. 1st, and Parkland, 2201 S. Cornwell Ave.

School zone hours for Surrey Hills Elementary in the City of Oklahoma City limits for pre-kindergarten through third grades will b 6:45 a.m. to 8 a.m. for drop-off and 1:20 p.m. to 3 p.m. for students to be picked up as well.

The school zone times for fourth through sixth grade schools, Independence Intermediate, 500 E. Vandament and Lakeview Intermediate, 872 S. Yukon Parkway, will be 6:45 a.m. to 8:10 a.m. for drop-off and from 2:10 p.m. to 3:10 p.m. for pickup.

Redstone Intermediate, 11501 W. Britton Road in Oklahoma City limits will eventually have flashing lights on in the school zone during the same times, but there will not be any lights until sometime in September. Oklahoma Gas & Electric Co. crews are working in the area, said Kristy Yager, City of Oklahoma City spokeswoman.

Times for Yukon Middle School, 801 Garth Brooks Blvd. will be 7:15 a.m. to 8:55 a.m. for drop-off and 2:10 p.m. to 3:10 p.m. for students to be picked up.

Yukon High School, 1777 S. Yukon Parkway, will be from 6:45 a.m. to 8:20 a.m. and from 10:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., and from 2:37 p.m. to 3:37 p.m.

Lights will also be flashing at St. John Nepomuck Catholic School, 600 Garth Brooks Blvd. From 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and from 2:15 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.

There are no school zone lights at Southwest Covenant School, 2300 S. Yukon Parkway, but school hours there are 7:24 a.m. to 4 p.m.
