A three-day filing period looms for the annual Yukon City Council election.

Eligible candidates are welcome to file for the Ward 1 and Ward 2 seats on the five-member council.

Current Ward 1 representative Rick Cacini has already said he will seek re-election to a second term. Cacini has been vice mayor since May.

Meanwhile, Ward 2 representative Shelli Selby has not announced her intentions. Selby has been Yukon’s mayor since May 2020.

Yukon City Council members are elected to four-year terms. Council members cannot serve more than two consecutive terms in office, according to the city charter.

Both Cacini and Selby were elected to the council in 2018, taking office that May.

Filing period will be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, Dec. 6-8 at the Canadian County Election Board office in El Reno.

To be eligible for the Yukon City Council, candidates must be:

  • A qualified voter of the City of Yukon;
  • A resident of the ward he or she seeks to represent; and
  • Elected by a majority vote of the qualified electors in their respective wards.

NEW TERMS START IN MAY

The primary election is set Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2022.

If no candidate receives at least 50% of votes cast in the primary, a general election will be Tuesday, April 5.

The winner in the Ward 1 and Ward 2 city council election will take their oaths of office May 3 to begin the next four-year term.

For the first time in decades, city council members will be sworn in by a new Yukon municipal judge – Jennifer King. George Ramey had performed that duty since the 1970s.

Also at the first city council meeting in May, council members will elect the mayor and vice mayor to serve for the next year.
