Calling all Canadian County help causes!

Yukon’s Best Main Street already is making plans for its annual Route 66 car cruise set 5-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15.

And they’re looking for non-profit help causes who want to participate.

Thousands of vehicles drive along the Mother Road in downtown Yukon each September for “Cruise-in for a Cause.”

Yukon Main Street Director Vicki Davis

“All local non-profit organizations are invited to submit a proposal,” Yukon Main Street director Vicki Davis said. “Proposals are due at the Main Street office by Feb. 28 to be considered.”

Cruise-in for a Cause began in 2019 to celebrate Yukon’s portion of Route 66 by creating a “vision of yesteryear”. The third Thursday each September is reserved as the official cruise date.

“It’s a great evening ‘under the lights’ of Main Street when car enthusiasts and the community come together to enjoy a passive-leisure cruise on Yukon’s 66 while supporting local, charitable causes,” Davis said.

This “open” cruise features all types of vehicles – vintage, classics, hot rods, muscle cars, and late models.

Participating help causes must:

  • Be a charitable, 501c3 organization in Canadian County
    • Set up and staff an advocacy booth during the event
  • Attend “Cruise Team” meetings on June 9 and Sept. 8
  • Provide volunteers at booth and “donation stations”
  • Participate in cross-promoting Cruise-in for a Cause

“We have so many 501c3 organizations and all do great work in the community,” Davis said. “All are welcome to apply.

“I want to be up front, so everyone understands that priority consideration is given to Yukon non-profit help causes whose mission is to serve Yukon’s populations with the greatest needs.”

WHO WILL IT BE? …

Some $3,410.08 was raised at the third annual Cruise-in for a Cause in September 2021 to benefit Compassionate Hands ($732.78), Manna Pantry ($822.78), Yukon Sharing ($1,102.74), and Canadian County Court-Appointed Special Advocates ($751.78).

Four causes are selected each year; Compassionate Hands, Manna Pantry and Yukon Sharing have participated each year.

There are reserved parking spaces in the 400 block of W Main for cruise participants who sign up in advance. These “park and show” registrants select their “cause of choice” – who receive 50% of that registration fee.

Cruise-in for a Cause attendees and cruisers give at donation stations on the event grounds, with those funds split among the four participates causes.

Each non-part help cause has an advocacy booth at the event, encouraging cruise-goers to donate cash and needed items for a “product drive” while promoting services they provide Yukon.

In 2021, the participating causes collected these products:

  • Compassionate Hands – 363 rolls of toilet paper
  • Manna Pantry – 122 pounds of peanut butter and jelly / macaroni and cheese
  • Yukon Sharing – several cases of soup
  • Canadian County CASA – $160 in gift cards
