County master gardeners gear up for spring activities

Canadian County Master Gardeners have a full lineup of activities scheduled across the county and open to the public this spring – including a Festival of the Child booth, spring plant swap, citywide garage sale appearance and an April and May information booth.

El Reno’s citywide garage sale is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 2, in the parking lot of the VFW, located at 1515 S. Rock Island.

No early sales will be permitted and it will be cash only,” said Courtney Keck, OSU Extension horticulture/4-H educator. “In case of rain, the sale will be moved inside the VFW ballroom.

This year’s Spring Plant Swap – normally held at Yukon Community Center – will be held at the OSU Extension office greenhouse, located at 220 N. Country Club Road in El Reno. The event is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 23.

Arrive with your plants at 9:30 a.m. to allow time for check in and perusing of the different perennials, bulbs, annuals and seeds available,” Keck said. “Make sure to bring a cart or box to carry your plants in.

We are excited to show off our greenhouse – once at the OSU Extension Office, follow signs on the gate to direct you to the greenhouse,” she said.

The April and May information booth will be held Saturdays those two months at Mustang Lowe’s Garden Center. Beginning April 9, master gardeners will be on hand from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to answer questions, as well as to provide gardening fact sheets and handouts.

Master gardeners will also host a booth at Yukon’s Festival of the Child, scheduled for Saturday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The master gardeners will be doing a fun make-and-take gardening activity with the kids during the festival,” Keck said.

As well as special events, master gardener meetings are always free and open to the public, Keck said. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month in the 4-H/education building located at Canadian County Fairgrounds, 220 N. Country Club in El Reno.

The meeting’s business portion begins at 9:30 a.m.; guest speakers begin their program at 10:30 a.m. Food is always provided, Keck said.
