An army of volunteers will be out this Saturday morning sweeping sidewalks, pickup up trash, pulling weeds, and planting flowers in downtown Yukon.

It’s all part of the “Great American Cleanup” set from 8 a.m. to noon May 14 on Main Street. Volunteers are asked to meet at the corner of 5th and Main to receive their assigned tasks.

Sponsored by Keep Oklahoma Beautiful, this Saturday’s spring cleaning and planting day is a project of Yukon 66 Main Street.

“The downtown clean-up event is a great opportunity for citizens to get out and serve their community,” Yukon Stormwater Manager Julie Shannon said. “It does not take long for a small, motivated group to pick up a lot of trash that would otherwise end up in a nearby body of water after a hard rain.”

The City of Yukon’s Stormwater Program participates with Yukon Main Street by picking up the bags of trash that volunteers gather along the historic business district.

“If any other groups have an interest in volunteering for micro clean-ups, they can contact me via email at stormwater@yukonok.gov.”

Yukon Main Street Board Member Shelli Selby has been busy in recent weeks recruiting volunteers for Saturday’s big event.

Yukon’s mayor is inviting civic-minded individuals, families, businesses, civic groups, and other organizations to “roll up their sleeves” and pitch in.

Downtown merchants are being encouraged to participate in the effort by sprucing up their storefronts and properties.

Interested volunteers should visit yukon66mainstreet.com or call the Yukon Main Street office at (405) 350-5999.

DOUBLING THE AREA

In 2021, Yukon’s spring cleanup project focused on the 400 and 500 blocks of Main Street – including the alleys.

Yukon Main Street Director Vicki Davis hopes to have 80 volunteers come out for this Saturday’s event – doubling last year’s total.

This would allow organizers to double the clean-up area.

Volunteers may to bring push brooms, rakes, garbage grabbers, weed tools, portable blowers, wheelbarrows, clippers, and gloves.

Trash bags will be provided. There will be a limited supply of gloves and safety vests for volunteers.

A lunch, sponsored by the Yukon Stormwater Program, will be provided for volunteers at 11:30 a.m. May 14.

Keep Oklahoma Beautiful partners have funded equipment and materials for the Great American Cleanup in Yukon. A Lowe’s grant provided a leaf blower and an OG&E grant provided planting materials.

Yukon Main Street’s adopt-a-bench sponsors also will be recognized during Saturday’s downtown cleanup and planting day.
