EL RENO – A felon has been sentenced to nine years in state prison after being convicted of making a lewd/indecent proposal to a minor in an undercover sting.
Jay Randall Benson, 39, pleaded guilty to the felony crime May 26 in Canadian County District Court. He appeared with his attorney, Ryan Coventon.
“In Canadian County, on or between June 10 and December 16, 2020, I made a lewd proposal to an individual I believed to be 14 years old through Facebook Messenger,” Benson stated in his signed guilty plea.
“I also drove a vehicle owned by another without her permission and with the intent to deprive her of that vehicle.”
District Judge Jack D. McCurdy II sentenced Benson to serve 15 years in Department of Corrections’ custody, with nine years in prison and six years suspended.
The defendant will be supervised by the DOC for two years after his release from prison while on probation. He must register as a sex offender.
Benson also was ordered to pay $991 in court fees, a $50 victim’s compensation assessment and related costs.
Benson was charged in Dec. 21, 2020, after an investigation by the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office.
Members of the sheriff’s Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) unit arrested Benson at a fast-food restaurant near Interstate 40 and Mustang Road for allegedly trying to pick up a 14-year-old girl for sex. He reportedly had brought a knife and condoms to the meeting.
Benson, of Midwest City, had previous felony convictions in Oklahoma County District Court for manufacturing a controlled dangerous substance, possession of CDS and possession of paraphernalia.
He had faced six to 40 years in prison for his latest crime.
During the investigation, Benson was told he was speaking to a 14-year-old female on social media; however, this did not stop him from continuing the conversation.
Quickly after Benson was put on notice, he reportedly sent photographs of his genitals to someone he believed was a minor female. Benson sent five sexually explicit photographs to an undercover investigator, according to the sheriff’s office.
During the conversation, Benson expressed worry about being set up by law enforcement – but quickly changed his attention to requesting oral sex from the minor.
Benson described various sexual fantasies he wanted to experience with the underage girl, including showering together. After the conversation became sexually explicit, Benson reportedly mentioned how much trouble he could get into by talking to a minor this way.
As the conversation progressed, Benson wanted to set up a meeting place to pick up the underage girl. He selected a fast-food restaurant to meet face-to-face.
Canadian County sheriff’s investigators on Dec. 16, 2020, waited for Benson at the meeting place, and soon Benson arrived to pick up the minor. It was there he was arrested.
Benson was booked at the Canadian County Jail on complaints of lewd/indecent acts to a child under 16 and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. The second count has been dismissed.
