Veteran journalist and longtime Yukon sports editor Charles Joseph (Chuck) Reherman was born on Dec. 12, 1955, in Davenport, Iowa. He passed away Aug. 4, 2023, in Oklahoma City at age 67.
Chuck graduated in 1974 from Chandler High School in Chandler, Okla.
He earned an associate’s degree in 1976 from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami, Okla.; and a bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1978 from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah.
He worked for his college newspaper before beginning his professional career in Pryor.
After graduating college, Chuck joined the Sequoyah County Times in Sallisaw where he spent 15 years as general manager and sports editor.
Then-Yukon Review publisher Randel Grigsby then hired Chuck to become managing editor in January 1993.
It was at the Review that Chuck met his future wife Deena, who was the newspaper’s production manager. They married Oct. 1, 1994, in Verdigris, OK.
By that time, Chuck had become the Review’s sports editor – a position he held until 2017.
That’s when Publisher Randy Anderson recruited Chuck to become sports editor of his new Yukon Progress newspaper.
Chuck spent 30 years chronicling Yukon’s sports team and athletes. He was a familiar presence on the sidelines at literally tens of thousands of local sporting events during his distinguished journalism career.
Chuck won many awards from the Oklahoma Press Association for outstanding photography and sports coverage.
He extensively covered both Yukon Public Schools and Southwest Covenant Schools’ middle and high school athletic teams over the past four decades.
Chuck especially enjoyed covering Yukon FFA rodeos at the Round-Up Club arena, stock car races at Oklahoma State Fair Speedway, horse racing at Blue Ribbon Downs racetrack in Sallisaw, and professional soccer in Oklahoma City.
Later in his career, Chuck started covering athletic events at the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University.
He was a huge cat lover and avid Green Bay Packers’ fan.
Chuck was preceded in death by his father Roger C. Reherman and mother Lillian F. Reherman-Scott, and grandparents Almeda “Mayme” Reherman and Joseph F. Reherman of Chandler and John J. Wilmet and Felicia M. Weaver of New York.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Deena of the home in Oklahoma City.
Other survivors are son Adam Reherman and his wife Holli of Sallisaw, daughter Valerie Price of Lavaca, Ark.; grandchildren Asher Reherman, Demetri Reherman, Sebastian Reherman, Owen Reherman, Logan Price, Olivia Price, and Adalynn Price; sister Roxanne Taylor and husband Jerry of Ada and sister Cheryl Reherman-Sorrell of Chandler; along with many nephews, nieces, aunts, and cousins.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 at the Southwest Covenant Schools’ Gym, 2300 S Yukon Parkway.
