Betty Lou Higbie

Betty Lou Higbie, daughter of the late George Daniel and Winnie Marueritte (McMahon) Salwaechter, was born Sept. 26, 1935, at Woodward, Oklahoma, and passed away July 26, 2022, at Kiowa, Kansas, at the age of 86 years and 10 months.

Betty grew up in the Carmen area, graduating from Carmen High School as the Valedictorian of her class. She went on to Oklahoma City University, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

On Sept. 22, 1956, she was united in marriage to Robert Dardis Higbie at the Carmen Methodist Church. They made their home in Oklahoma City and Yukon, where they raised their daughters. She taught elementary school in Oklahoma City Public Schools before retiring after a 20-year teaching career in Yukon. Betty moved back to the Alva area in 2021 to be near family before moving to the Kiowa Manor.

She was a member of the Lion’s Club, the Surrey Hills Garden Club and Delta Zeta Sorority. Betty also enjoyed golfing and painting.

Besides her parents, George and Winnie, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dardis Higbie.

Betty is survived by her daughters, Kim Scherich and husband David of Alva, and Kay Miller and husband Greg of Franktown, Colorado; her brother, George Salwaechter and wife Ann of Green Valley, Arizona; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Betty Higbie will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2022, at the Marshall Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Paul Kirk officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, north of Carmen. Arrangements are entrusted to Wentworth Mortuary, LLC, of Carmen.
