Millerettes wrap up 6A-2 title

By Chuck Reherman, Sports Editor – Yukon wrapped up the District 6A-2 title Thursday night. But, it wasn’t easy.

The Millerettes scored three runs on Westmoore errors to open a four-run lead in the bottom of the sixth, then turned back the Lady Jaguars in the top of the seventh inning to post a 6-3 win at the Millerette Softball Complex.

Yukon improved to 12-0 in the district and does have two games remaining. But, even if the Millerettes stumbled in both, the team has beaten Moore and Westmoore twice. Moore is 8-2 in the district and Westmoore now 7-4.

It was the second time that the teams had met in a little over a week and both games were close. Yukon led 3-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning and used three Westmoore errors to score three runs.

Westmoore did threaten the Millerettes in the top of the seventh inning and had the tying run on base and go-ahead run at the plate at one time.

Westmoore had loaded the bases when Josie Tofpi walked and Janelle Marwitz and Whitney Walde both singled to load the bases. Emylie Rinehart reached on an error to score a run, But, with the bases loaded and two out, Breley Webb got Claira Skaggs to ground out and end the game.

“We have had some close ones and knew Westmoore was going to be a tough out,” Millerette coach Heather Shanahan said. “It got a little tight in the seventh inning, but our players didn’t panic or rush things, they just went about their business and got the final out.

“We are just glad to get that one over with,” she said. “We had troubled with them in the last game (a 4-2 Millerette win) and we are happy to get the win.”

In the bottom of the sixth, Anna Icenhower singled to start the rally Jayden Flowers reached on a throwing error and Aleyah Holman reached on an error to score the first run. Chyenne Factor reached on the fourth Westmoore error, scoring two runs and opening a 6-2 lead.

Yukon had taken the initial lead in the bottom of the third inning after loading the bases on a Holman walk and singles by Rylee Uhr and Factor. Webb walked to force in the first run of the game and Makenna Johnson reached on an error that scored two runs.

Moore cut the lead to 3-2 in the fourth on a Kailey Gamble solo home run and a Millerette error.

The Millerettes host Putnam City in a 6:30 p.m. game Monday. It will be senior night for Yukon.
